Thionville is a town in the Moselle Department, Lorraine region, northeastern France. From 1870 to 1919, the town was held by the Germans and called Diedenhofen. There is evidence of Jews in the town from the 14th century. At its height, the Jewish population was less than 350 persons. After the Nazis took control, a few Jews were shot and about 30 families were deported. A synagogue was established in 1805 and rebuilt on numerous occasions. The synagogue was burned down by the Nazis, but rebuilt in 1957. Below is a postcard from the period of German control prior to 1919 depicting the synagogue.
