General

Tarnopol is a city in the Ukraine.  Between the world wars, it was part of Poland.  A Jewish presence in the city dates from its founding in the 1500's.  At the start of World War II, there were about 18,000 Jews in the city.  Immediately after the German occupation on July 2, 1941, about 5,000 Jews were murdered.  A ghetto with about 12,500 persons was established in September, 1941.  By the time the ghetto was liquidated on June 23, 1943, most of the Jews had been either killed or deported to death camps such as Belzec.
