Targu-Mures, Romania

General

Targu-Mures (Hungarian- Maros Vasarhely) is a town in the Transylvanian Basin of north-central Romania.  The area was part of Hungary until the end of World War I and between 1940-45.  Jews began to settle in the town in 1836.  By 1941, the Jewish population was about 6,000 (almost 13% of the total population).  Shortly after the German occupation of Hungary on March 14, 1944, the Jews of Targu-Mures were confined to a ghetto.  Deportations to Auschwitz began soon thereafter, and by the end of June, 1944, almost all the Jews had been deported.  About 800 survivors settled in the town after the war.  By 1971, the Jewish population had decreased to less than 200.

The postcard below (mailed in 1917) depicts the Great Synagogue of Targu-Mures which was completed in 1899.
