Szolnok, Hungary

 

General

    Jews settled in the town after 1840.  By 1941, the Jewish population was about 2,600 (6% of the total population).  After the German invasion of Hungary in March 1944, the remaining Jews were to Auschwitz and Austria.  Depicted in the below postcard is the Great Synagogue of Szolnok which was dedicated in 1898.  After the war, the synagogue was converted into a municipal library.
