Stanislav (Ivanov Frankovsk), Ukraine

 

General

    Ivanov Frankovsk is a city in the Ukraine.  From 1793 until 1918, it under Austrian rule and known as Stanislav.  As part of Poland until 1939, it was known as Stanislawow.  By 1931, the Jewish population numbered about 25,000 (over 40%  of the total population.  During the course of the Russian occupation from Septemeber, 1939, to 1941, many Jewish refugees settled there.  The Germans took control in July, 1942, and established a ghetto later that year.  On October 12, 1941, the Germans killed 10,000 Jews at the edge of large pits dug for this purpose.  Deportations to Belzec began in March, 1942.  The final liquidation of the ghetto began in January, 1943.  It is estimated that only about 1,500 of the original Jewish population survived the war.  Depicted in the postcard below is a synagogue in the town when part of the Austrian Empire.
