Although a small number of Jews arrived in San Francisco prior to 1849, a large number arrived during the gold rush of 1849-50. Two congregations were formed in 1850. As of 1990, there were about 90,000 Jews in San Francisco and another 130,000 in the surrounding areas. The postcard below depicts Temple Beth Israel after the earthquake in 1906. This card is postmarked June, 1906.
