Mikilov was the largest and most important Jewish community in Moravia, Czech Republic. Jews were mentioned as early as 1369. The Jewish population reached its peak in the mid-19th Century of about 3,700 (almost 40% of the total population. At this time there were at least 12 synagogues in operation. This population dropped to about 900 by 1900, and only two synagogues remained in operation. Almost all the Jews left after the annexation by the Germans in 1938. Those who remained were deported ultimately to the east via Brno. The postcard below depicts the Neuschul Synagogue in Mikulov.
