Michalovce, Slovakia

 

General

    Michalovce (Hungarian- Nagymihaly) is a town in northeast Slovakia.  Prior to the end of World War I, the town was part of Hungary.  Between the end of World War I and the beginning of World War II, the town was part of the of Czechoslovakia.  In 1941, the Jewish community numbered about 4,000 (about 30% of the total population).  From May, 1942, about 2,000 Jews were deported to death camps.  A Jewish community was reestablished after the war.  Depicted in the postcard below is the synagogue of Michalovce, which was one of the most imposing buildings in the town.
