Mainz, Germany

General

Mainz is one of the oldest Jewish communities in Germany, dating from the early 10th century.  The community reached its peak of about 3,100 persons in 1900.  At the start of the Nazi regime, the population had dropped to about 2,600 persons, and by 1939, about 1,400 persons remained.  By September, 1942, most of the community was deported to Poland and Theresienstadt.  The postcard below depicts the New Synagogue of Mainz which was burned down during Kristallnacht.
