Luneburg, Germany

General

Luneburg is a city, Lower Saxony Land (state), north-central Germany, on the Ilmenau River at the northeastern edge of the Lüneburger Heide (heath). The synagogue was designed by Stadtbaumeister Kampf and built between 1892-94 in the north German Gothic manner. It appears that the use of local style and materials was to help the Jews integrate in a city where they had only recently been allowed to live.  The postcard below, postmarked July 4, 1905, depicts the Luneburg synagogue.
