Landau, Germany

 

    The postcard below, from 1917, depicts the synagogue of Landau, Germany.  Landau is located in the Rhineland area of southwestern Germany.  Jews were first mentioned inn the town in the late 13th Century.  The Jewish community reached its highpoint at the end of the 19th Century when the population reached about 900.  By 1933, the population had decreased to about 600.  By the start of the war, the community had dwindled to less than 100 through emigration.  The remaining Jews were deported to Gurs in southern France in October, 1940.
