The postcard below depicts the great synagogue in Samara (now Kuibyshev), a city in Russia on the Volga River. Jews were not allowed to live in this area until the latter part of the 19th century. The pictured synagogue was built in 1908. By 1926, there were about 7,000 Jews in the city (about 4% of the total population). During World War II, many refugees from the German occupied regions settled in the city. In 1970, there was an estimated Jewish population of about 25,000.
