General

Kisvarda is a city in northeast Hungary. The Jewish community was organized in 1796. The first synagogue was built in 1801. The Jewish population was about 3,800 in 1941 (25% of the total population). Most of the young people were sent to the Ukraine for forced labor and most perished. A regional ghetto of about 7,000 Jews was established in April, 1944. At the end of May, all were deported to Auschwitz.  The postcard below depicts the Kisvarda Synagogue which is now a folk art museum.  The postcard is postmarked June 28, 1924.
