Jews flocked to Kimberley on the discovery of diamonds there in 1870.  The first synagogue was built in 1876.  Many Jews left on the discovery of gold on the Rand.  In 1970, the Jewish population numbered about 600 out of a total population of 25,000.  The postcard below (postmarked 1906) depicts the synagogue in Kimberley.
