Kecskemet is a city in central Hungary. Jews first arrived in the city in the 16th century when the it was under Turkish rule. The Jewish population reached its peak around 1900 at 2,000 persons. By 1941, the number of Jews had fallen below 1,400. At the end of June, 1944, after the German occupation of Hungary, all the Jews were sent to Auschwitz, from which only 150 returned. The postcards below depict the synagogue in Kecskemet. The synagogue is now used as a church.
