Hranice, Czech Republic

 

General

    Hranice is a town in Moravia, Czech Republic. Jews first settled in the town at the end of the 15th Century. The Jewish population reached a peak of 800 in 1857, and a new synagogue was built in 1864. At the time of the annexation to Germany in 1938, there were about 140 Jews remaining. In June, 1942, most of the Jews were deported to Theresienstadt and from there to the death camps in Poland. The postcard below depicts the synagogue in Hranice.
