Dortmund is a city in western Germany with extensive port facilities at the southern point of the Dortmund-Ems canal. Jews are mentioned in Dortmund in the late eleventh century. The Jewish population increased from 120 in 1840 to over 4,000 in 1933. By May, 1939, only 1,500 Jews remained in the city. Most of these ultimately perished in the extermination camps. A small community was established after the war. The postcard below (postmarked 1914) depicts the synagogue in Dortmund.
