General

Detmold is located between Dortmund and Hannover.  Jews were first mentioned in the area in 1345.  The Jewish population reached its peak in 1885 at about 1,000 persons.  By 1928, the population had dwindled to about 600.  After the Nazi rise power, the Jewish population came to an end through emigration and deportation.  Depicted in the postcard below is the synagogue of Detmold, which was built in 1904.
