Brest, Belarus

 

General

    The postcard below depicts a synagogue located in Brest-Litovsk, Belarus.  The Jewish presence in Brest dates from the 14th century.  At the outbreak of World War II, the Jewish population was about 30,000 (over half the population of the town).  When the Germans took control of Brest in 1941, 5,000 Jewish men were taken to the countryside and murdered.  The ghetto created by the Germans was liquidated by 1943.  Wjen Brest was liberated in July, 1944, there were less than 10 Jews in the city.  In 1970, the Jewish population was estimated to be about 2,000.
