Braila, Romania

General

Braila is a town on the Danube in southeast Romania and is the second largest port in the country.  By 1860, the Jewish population reached almost 10,000.  In 1941, there were about 5,100 Jews in the town.  After the war, the community grew to about 6,000.  The bulk of this community ultimately emigrated to Israel.  The synagogue is depicted in the postcard below postmarked in 1917.
