Oradea (Hungarian-Nagyvarad) is a city in Transylvania, western Romania. Jews lived in the city from the early 18th century. By 1941, the Jewish population was in excess of 21,000 (about 23% of the total population). The community came to an end in 1944 when the German-Hungarian administration established a ghetto and sent its occupants to death camps. Today, the Jewish population is estimated at less than 1,000.
The two postcards below depict the synagogue in Oradea. The first is postmarked in 1900 when the city was part of Hungary, and the second is postmarked 1925 when the city was part of Romania.
