Gyor, Hungary

General

Gyor is a city in northwest Hungary near the Austrian border.  A Jewish presence in the city dates from the late 1300's.  In 1920, there were about 6,000 Jews in the city, and in 1941, there were about 7,200.  Prior to the Nazi occupation of Hungary in March, 1944, most of the male Jews had been sent to Hugarian labor camps.  In June, 1944, the remaining Jews (about 5,000) were deported to Auschwitz.  The Jewish population today is probably less than 200.

The postcard below (postmarked 1899) depicts the synagogue in Gyor which was built in 1871 and designed by Karoly Benko.  The synagogue was sold in 1969 and now used as a dance school.
