Ostrowiec was a city in the district of Kielce. At the time of the German occupation in September, 1939, there were about 10,000 Jews in the town. The Judenrat was formed in late September, and a Ghetto was created in April, 1941, and liquidated in the first half of 1943. An estimated 16,000 Jews passed through the Ghetto. The Ghetto residents worked in plants for German construction companies, cement and brick works, and road construction. In October, 1942, 11,000 persons were sent to Treblinka and about 2,000 were shot. A work camp was created for the persons who remained.
