Nowy Targ (Neumarkt in German) was a town in the Cracow district of Poland. The Jewish population reached a peak of about 1,300 at the end of World War I. The Germans occupied the town in September, 1939, and immediately instituted forced labor and looting of Jewish property. A Judenrat was created at the end of 1940. In May 1941, a ghetto was created with, as a result of refugees, a population of about 4,000. At the end of August, 1941, the ghetto was liquidated and the surviving Jews deported to the Belzec death camp.
Below is a thumbnail of an official document regarding a complaint between a Jewish person, Juda Holzmann, and a Krakau debtor, Kazimiera Skalska, dated July 29, 1944. It is unclear how this person was able to survive the liquidation of the ghetto.
