Lowenstadt (Brzeziny) was a town in the Lodz Province of Poland, about 19 kilometers from Lodz. The town was occupied by the Germans shortly after the start of the war. At that time, the total population of the town was about 12,000, half of which were Jews. A Judenrat was formed, and in May, 1940, a ghetto was created. The final liquidation of the ghetto took place in May, 1942, with the elderly going to the Chelmo death camp and the rest to the Lodz ghetto.
Below are thumbnails of the front and back of a postcard sent by the Judenrat in Lowenstadt to the Judenrat in the Lodz ghetto, postmarked October 17, 1941. The message in Polish inquires about M. Wajs and is signed by a Judenaltester in Lowenstadt/ Ikka Felks 2-line red cachet on the back. The card bears a Der Judenalteste in Lowenstadt-Getto 2-line red caachet on the front. There is a reply in green on the back. Please click on the thumbnail to see the full image, and then click your back key or "Postcard" in the left frame to return.
