Covers

Below are thumbnails of the front and back of two covers from Frieda Sara Falkenstein at the Berlin Jewish Hospital.  The first cover is postmarked March 7, 1940, to Curacao, Netherland Antilles, and the second cover is postmarked September 30, 1940, to New York City.  Please click on the thumbnail to see the full image, and then click your back key or "Covers" in the left frame to return.  This hospital, founded in the 18th century, was the last surviving Jewish institution in Berlin when Berlin was liberated in April, 1945.  During the war, it also served as a center for various Gestapo controlled activities.  Most of the Jews who protected by the hospital were either half Jewish or living in mixed marriages.
