Bzenec

General

Bzenec is a town in the Czech Republic. Jewish presence in the town dates from the 14th century. The Jewish population reached a peak of 965 in 1857. The synagogue depicted in the postcard below was consecrated in 1863. By 1930, the population had declined to under 150. The synagogue was closed down by Reinhard Heydrich in October, 1941. In January, 1943, the remaining Jews were deported to Theresienstadt, and from there, most were sent to Auschwitz.  Below is a thumbnail of a postally used postcard depicting the synagogue in Bzenec.  Please click on the thumbnail to see the full image, and then click your back key or "Postcard" in the left frame to return.
